svādhyāya

Sva means "own," or "self." Adhyāya can be translated as "lesson," from a root that suggests going over something again. So svādhyāya is study, but the kind where you keep returning. Historically, it referred to the daily recitation of a text that was already committed to memory, spoken aloud until the words came on their own.

It's connected to smṛti, what is remembered. Neither one is about acquiring something you lacked. You come back to what you already know and make it available again.

Rereading a teaching you know well supports your practice, and so does noticing one of your own patterns that shows up again and again.
