Background

Smriti is the mind holding something it already has and bringing it forward again. In Yoga Sūtra 1.6 that means memory, one of the five ways the mind moves. In Yoga Sūtra 1.20 it is a faculty a practitioner develops, closer to what later traditions call "mindfulness," though the two are the same act. Keeping the teaching in mind while you go is remembering.
