Background

Two important terms in classical yoga come from this root: klesha is the noun, the affliction itself, and klishta is the adjective, what a thing is when an affliction has hold of it. The sense in the root is passive. Something is being done to you, and the older meanings of "wearing down" and "being worn out" are similar. That is worth knowing before reading Yoga Sūtra 1.5, because it means a klishta vritti is not a movement of the mind that misbehaves, but rather one that something else is driving.
