This Sunday, September 12, will be the grand reopening of the new Spirit of the Lake studio at 6140 Lake Linden Drive in Shorewood. There will be free outdoor classes and in-studio classes running throughout the day, as well as chair massages, free hourly give-aways, and an opportunity to connect with the Spirit of the Lake yoga community. Sign up online to save your spot as the indoor classes are limited.
After more than a year of practicing alone in our homes, the vaccine allows us to practice together safely (both teachers and students must be fully vaccinated). Group yoga can provide a wide variety of benefits, such as:
- Provide a space to meet like-minded people
- Help you keep focused
- Give you a reason to get out of the house
- Increase your confidence
- Promote learning from your peers
One recent study divided 69 medical students into three groups: one group did group exercise, another group did exercise alone, and the final group did not do any exercise. They found that participation in group classes led to a statistically significant decrease in perceived stress and an increase in physical, mental, and emotional quality of life as compared with exercising alone.
Of course, you should not come to Spirit of the Lake on Sunday just because of a research study. In fact, trying to "get" something from yoga would probably be futile. The practice of yoga invites you to "come see for yourself" (ehipassika in Pāli). Join us this weekend and find out if attending in-person classes leads to beneficial effects for you.
