The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali

4.15

Original Text

vastu-sāmye citta-bhedāt tayor vibhaktaḥ panthāḥ

Translation

The same object is constant, yet each mind perceives it differently. This shows that mind and object cannot be the same.

Terms

citta (mind)

Background

This sutra reminds us that each mind shapes its own way of seeing, even when the object stays the same. Ten people can look at one thing and carry ten different understandings. The teaching points us toward humility: the world exists on its own, yet perception reflects the condition of the mind. Rather than forcing agreement or assuming our view alone holds truth, we can practice curiosity about the diversity of perspectives. In this way, the sutra offers both a grounding in reality and an invitation to compassion. It assures us that difference in perception does not mean confusion or failure, but the natural unfolding of consciousness.
