The Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali

Original Text

pariṇāmaikatvād vastu-tattvam

Translation

Things seem real to us because their changes follow a consistent pattern

Terms

parinama (transformation)
vastu-tattvam (the reality of the object)

Background

This sūtra says that the world around us is real, and not just something created by our minds. Things feel solid and dependable because the way they change follows steady, predictable patterns. Even though everything is always shifting, those changes happen in a consistent way, so we recognize an object as “that thing” over time.

Because nature follows reliable laws, we can study our experience clearly. That clarity is what eventually helps us see the difference between our true Self and the changing world around us.
