pratipaksha bhavana

Translation

cultivating the opposite

Background

In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, pratipaksha-bhavana is the practice of consciously cultivating an opposing, positive thought when the mind is disturbed by a harmful or negative emotion (vitarka). Rather than simply suppressing or fighting destructive feelings like anger, greed, or resentment, this technique invites the practitioner to actively redirect their mental energy toward a counteracting, wholesome quality. This might mean replacing frustration with compassion or restlessness with contentment. By intentionally shifting focus away from unhelpful habit patterns, pratipaksha-bhavana serves as a practical tool for mental recalibration, helping to neutralize inner turbulence and restore a state of clarity and equilibrium.
