Background

While often associated with classical mythology through the warrior deity Skanda, skandasana as practiced today is a modern functional addition to dynamic yoga sequences rather than a posture rooted in medieval hatha texts. Practiced by shifting weight low into one deep knee bend while extending the opposite leg long, it breaks out of the standard front-to-back sagittal plane to build lateral mobility and agility. This grounded, low-to-the-earth posture actively stretches the inner thighs, groin, and hamstrings while strengthening the ankles, knees, and hips, offering an invigorating challenge for hip flexibility, spatial awareness, and balance.
