From table, one arm reaches forward and the opposite leg reaches back, leaving the body supported on one hand and one knee. It looks like a strength shape and behaves like a balance. Most of the wobble comes from the supporting hip and shoulder rather than from the limbs in the air, and reaching long in both directions steadies it more than lifting higher does. The pose came into yoga classes from physical therapy and strength training, where it is called bird dog, and the Sanskrit name was added afterward.
