Yoga Research

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is the Federal Government’s lead agency for scientific research on complementary and integrative health approaches. One of their many useful publications is "Yoga: What You Need To Know."

VA researchers are conducting studies to determine which complementary and integrative health (CIH) approaches are truly safe and effective. Yoga is one of the evidence-based complementary and integrative health (CIH) approaches within the VHA Whole Health System of care included in the Veteran’s medical benefits package per VA Directive 1137They found yoga to be safe and have sufficient evidence of benefit to be recommended as appropriate components of care for the Veteran population. Yoga Alliance is the largest nonprofit association representing the yoga community. They foster and support the high quality, safe, accessible, and equitable teaching of yoga. The Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, publisher of Greater Good magazine, explores the roots of happy and compassionate individuals, strong social bonds, and altruistic behavior—the science of a meaningful life.

The mission of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is to cultivate well-being and relieve suffering through a scientific understanding of the mind.

The mission of the Academic Consortium is to advance the principles and practices of integrative healthcare within academic institutions. The Consortium provides its institutional membership with a community of support for its academic missions and a collective voice for influencing change.

Mental health

Dedicated to the well-being of all people and guided by science, the World Health Organization leads and champions global efforts to give everyone, everywhere an equal chance to live a healthy life. They offer information about numerous health topics, including mental health.

Global Mental Health works to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and increase support for mental health around the world.  

Open Sourcing Mental Health is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to raising awareness, educating, and providing resources to support mental wellness in the tech and open source communities

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders.

Trauma-informed yoga

Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based adjunctive treatment for complex, developmental trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant PTSD. Empirical research indicates TCTSY to be an effective treatment for the most severe forms of trauma.
