On March 31st, we recognize Transgender Day of Visibility. This day isn’t just a celebration. Today is a reminder of our shared responsibility to foster a world where everyone can live openly and authentically. It’s a chance to reflect on the lives and contributions of transgender individuals and acknowledge the challenges they face.

It’s more than a symbolic gesture. It’s about standing together, fighting for the right of every person to express who they are and live authentically.

Transgender Day of Visibility isn’t just about celebrating one group. It’s about all of us, and the kind of world we choose to create together.

We all have the right to express ourselves freely and to be who we are without fear or shame. This day calls us to examine how we, as individuals and as a society, can do better. It invites us to create spaces where every person — transgender, non-binary, and cisgender — feels seen, heard, and respected.

Becoming an Ally Means Taking Action

In the world of yoga, we understand the importance of space. We know that a peaceful, supportive environment is essential for growth and healing. This mindset should extend to our communities and daily lives.

Becoming an ally means actively thinking about how we create those spaces.

  1. Physical spaces matter. Are the environments we create truly inclusive? This isn’t just about words, it’s about action. Are our bathrooms and changing rooms gender-neutral? Are we fostering a culture where respecting pronouns and gender identities is second nature, not an afterthought? We must ensure that no one feels excluded in the places where they seek solace and rejuvenation.
  2. Intentions count, but actions speak louder. Do we work to make everyone feel welcome? Do we share our pronouns and ensure we use each person’s correct pronouns? It’s not enough to hang a flag or post a sign. Are we using inclusive language, acknowledging our mistakes, and striving to do better? True allyship is an ongoing practice, not a single gesture.
  3. Challenge ciscentrism. Recognize and call out the systems that favor one experience over another. Reflect on how society often prioritizes cisgender individuals and actively work to change that. The small ways we may unintentionally exclude others are harmful, so we must make conscious steps to make space for everyone.
  4. Representation is powerful. Consider who we see in our communities and in positions of influence. Do we make room for transgender and non-binary voices? Representation helps people feel they belong. It also means actively working to amplify those voices, ensuring they have a place at the table.

More than One Day

As we celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility, let’s remember that the fight for respect and equality isn’t a one-day event. It’s a journey, and a path we must walk together.

And in yoga, we know that real growth — real transformation — comes from within. So, let’s create spaces where everyone can live and express themselves authentically, today and every day.

Together, we can build communities of hope where transgender and non-binary people are not just seen but truly valued and celebrated.

A Commitment to Education, Empathy, and Action

This day may begin with visibility, but it shouldn’t end there. I encourage you to carry this commitment into your daily life, always striving to learn more, to be a better ally, and to support those who are too often silenced.

If you want to take action, consider supporting OutFront MN Community Services or Transforming Families Minnesota. These organizations work to challenge prejudice and foster understanding. Your donation or time can help to counteract the misinformation that fuels discrimination.

Let’s ensure our voices are heard. Contact your Representative and Senators today to show your support for trans rights and visibility. Use this handy form from the Human Rights Campaign to send your Representative and Senators a note in support of the trans community.
